Boarding Your Dog? 4 Things To Pack In Your Puppy's Pack

Blog

Many people choose to travel with their pets, but bringing your dog to certain hotels may not be allowed. In these situations, you can board your dog at a safe, caring place without any worries. Unfortunately, most pet owners are not prepared for what is needed when their dog stays in a boarding facility. With this guide, you will know what to pack in your puppy's pack.

Food

Never assume the boarding facility or your pet sitter will provide your dog with their usual brand of food. When gathering your dog's items, be sure to pack enough food for the entirety of your trip. In case of travel delays, it is also smart to pack a few days of extra food.

Up to half of all dogs have food allergies, so if your dog suffers with an allergy to a specific ingredient, packing their special food is even more important. Ensuring your dog eats the right food will reduce the risk of skin and coat irritation, gastrointestinal discomfort, and emotional distress while you are away.

Medication

Make sure the kennel technician/pet sitter has experience administering medications and supplements to dogs. Discuss the type, reason, dosage, and method of administering the medication before you leave your dog at the kennel.

Be sure the facility has a refrigerator, as well. This is important since many medications must be refrigerated after opening.

Also, spend some time writing down the medication names, dosages, times to administer, and other relevant information on a sheet of paper or in your dog's records. This will be helpful for the technicians.

Medical Records

A copy of your dog's most recent medical records may be required by the boarding facility. Ask your veterinarian to provide a copy of these records, which should include proof of vaccinations against rabies and kennel cough.

The medical records should also include detailed information on your dog's allergies, medications, and past illnesses or surgeries.

Comfort Items

Your dog may feel a bit of anxiety or sadness when you are away, but you can ease their distress by sending a few of their favorite items to the kennel with them.

If your dog has a favorite blanket or bed, ask the technicians if they can bring it to the boarding facility. Be sure to wash and dry the bedding beforehand.

Most kennels will have numerous toys for their visitors, but bringing a stuffed animal or chew toy from home will also provide your dog with some comfort.

With the right planning, your dog can enjoy their stay at a boarding kennel. Before heading out on your trip, be sure to pack the above items for quality food, health, fun, and comfort. Click here to learn more about dog sitting.

choosing a pet day care for your beloved dog

Our pets are like our children — they need to be cared for when we are away. After being a stay at home mom for many years, I had to make some serious adjustments when I reentered the workforce. My children are all grown, but my dog just can't be home by himself. I had to find a day care for him to go to when I went to work. I was conflicted — how do I choose the day care that will provide him with the love, care and attention that he is used to? This blog will provide you with the same tips that I was given that helped me choose.
