How To Choose The Right Pet Food For Your Dog

Blog

There are so many pet food choices on the market today that it can be difficult to find the right one for your dog. It can make for a confusing trip to the grocery store pet food aisle. Which one should you choose that's right for your dog? What food will give them a shiny coat? What one is best for their digestive system?

Here are some tips on finding the right pet food for your dog to keep them healthy and their coat looking it's best.

Think About Your Dog

Before heading to buy pet food for your dog, first think about your dog overall. For example, how old is your dog? Is your dog a senior or a puppy? Each age group will require different ingredients for their energy level and to keep them healthy. On that note, what is the overall health of your dog? Do they have any allergies? Do they have any pre-existing conditions that must be maintained?

Also, what is your dog's breed? Are they a large dog or a small one? Different size dogs will need different nutrition. How active is your dog? If they love to run and play all day they will need more calories than a quiet dog.

One other thing, is your dog a lactating mother to puppies? Or do you plan to breed them? These are all important considerations when choosing pet food.

Check The Ingredients

Knowing how to read the label on pet food is important to finding the right one for them. For example, labels that list meat such as beef or chicken typically mean that that ingredient is one of the primary ones and the food mostly contains it. If the label reads 'chicken dinner' or something similar, there is less of that protein contained in the food.

Pet food for dogs typically should contain mostly meat in them as they are omnivores. While they do get nutrients from vegetables as well, the meat is better for their overall health.

Research The Brand You Want

If your dog has health issues or if you just want to make sure that the pet food you give them is well made, then research the company of the brands that most interest you. Look to see if they meet quality standards and where they source their ingredients. If your pet has an allergy to grains check to see if they make a grain-free option.

choosing a pet day care for your beloved dog

Our pets are like our children — they need to be cared for when we are away. After being a stay at home mom for many years, I had to make some serious adjustments when I reentered the workforce. My children are all grown, but my dog just can't be home by himself. I had to find a day care for him to go to when I went to work. I was conflicted — how do I choose the day care that will provide him with the love, care and attention that he is used to? This blog will provide you with the same tips that I was given that helped me choose.
